What Is Roof Pitch and Why Is It Important?

What is a Roof Pitch?

"Pitch" or is a roofing industry term that refers to the angle that your roof rises up (incline). Roof pitch or roof slope is a very important aspect and it is considered the primary factor in roof design. A roof pitch will determine the appropriate materials for the roof. A roof with a high pitch will allow products such as shingles or tiles. However, these materials do not work well on low-slope roofs. Likewise, a rolled roofing or the old rock roofs will not be appropriate for a high-slope roof.

Importance of the Roof Pitch When Measuring Your Roof

Although we can get many images or "measurements" on the internet most do not take into account the pitch of a roof. You cannot get an accurate measurement of a roof based on square footage of a home. The steeper the pitch of the roof the more area it covers, the more roofing material is needed. Additionally, many homes have more than one pitch. View a Sample Report to see how we are able to measure the pitch of your roof.
